Fans who have followed Umphrey’s McGee for any period of time know that there are only two guarantees: you never know what you’re going to get and Umphrey’s always delivers.
How else can a band be relentlessly innovative in both music AND fan relations for 16 years? Umphrey’s McGee has built a stellar reputation based on marathon concerts that mix original, technically demanding tunes with complex epics and playful covers. They are aiming to release their eighth studio album later this year and they told Rolling Stone that they’re trying to break away from their improv-heavy live shows to create a concise, cohesive rock experience. Produced by Manny Sanchez (Fall Out Boy) and recorded in Chicago and California, the new album is full of “fun, chunky riffs.” One of the tracks, “Puppet String,” is already in the band’s live repertoire and another, “Educated Guess” is one that Cummins describes as “awesome avant-garde weird stuff.”
The band is financing the album themselves, and will self-release it on their own record label. They plan to put the final touches on it after their latest tour concludes in April. “I think there’s definitely a few tracks on this that will help make us some new fans,” says Cummins. “I really hope this is something people are going to spend a lot of time listening to with headphones.”
Home to one of one of the band’s first successful tours outside of the comforts of their Midwestern circuit in the early years, Colorado has always welcomed Umphrey’s McGee with open arms. And July 5 will mark the band’s eighth time on the legendary Red Rocks stage. Umphrey’s McGee at Red Rocks continues to be a highlight of the year for the powerhouse sextet, and not to be missed by any fan of live music.
