DAIC Film Series - Crossroads Theater - 5/16/2012, 6:30 PM

The Denver American Indian Commission is pleased to present a monthly series of Indigenous Film @ the Crossroads in partnership with the International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management. For the May program of Indigenous Film a the Crossroads, we are presenting RIVER OF RENEWAL, a documentary which looks at disputed water interests on the Klamath River among farmers, commercial fisherman and Indian tribes. Following the film will be Q&A with producer Jack Kohler (via Skype) and staff of Native American Public Telecommunications: assistant director Georgiana Lee and marketing director Jessica Kinser.

The program (film + discussion) runs 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Crossroads Theater @ Five Points.

With the ability to sing and play a large variety of instruments it’s obvious that music comes naturally to Flux Pavilion aka Joshua Steele. Since first sitting down at a keyboard at the age of six his dream has been to make music that he loves, and perform it to people who love it just as much. Influenced by the likes of The Prodigy, Basement Jaxx and dubstep pioneer Rusko, Flux loved the high energy madness that dance music was capable of and set about making some of his own in the form of dubstep. Already adept with production skills he was soon off the starting block and with his tunes swiftly generating interest on the circuit, it was soon clear that what started off as a bit of experimentation had led to Flux landing on his feet with the dubstep sound. Before long labels were banging at his door itching to release his music so he decided that the world was ready for a bit of Flux Pavilion! Signing tunes to Rottun, Shift, XS Records, Stupid Fly and Dubmented Beats and working with artists such as Datsik and Trolley Snatcha, his tunes were soon dominating the charts and starting to receive a lot more interest from the big boys. Next Ntype featured his track “Fucking Noise”on his "Rinse Mix” CD, and not content with that then signed Flux’s track “Meathead” to his label Wheel & Deal. This was a massive look for Flux and got his name out there to all the DJs: soon enough no club was safe from one of Flux's bangers and the bookings came flying in all over the UK and Europe. While his career flourished Flux and childhood friend Doctor P had also been working on some stuff together. They teamed up with legendary DJ and drum-and-bass pioneer DJ Swan-e, and Earl Falconer of UB40, and together formed the infamous Circus Records. With this new platform Flux began to imprint the scene with his sound and was quickly becoming one of the main players in the Circus dubstep family. His track “Voscillate,” which features his own vocals, received “Track of the Week” on Rusko's Radio One Takeover, and his single “I Can’t Stop” received “World record of the week” from Radio 1’s Zane Lowe. Well known for his high energy performances and smashing anthems Flux is now performing all over the globe.

Emmy and Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth will launch her debut world tour in May. The 19-date North American leg of the tour kicks off May 9th in Seattle and concludes in Chenoweth’s hometown of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma on June 24th.

Kristin Chenoweth will perform at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Performing Arts Complex May 18.

In a rare concert appearance, Sony Recording Artist Chenoweth will perform songs from her latest album Some Lessons Learned, as well as an array of her most memorable songs and Broadway show tunes, including music from Wicked, Promises, Promises, and Glee.

Chenoweth has had an extraordinarily diverse career. In November 2010, she was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame for her achievements. She won a Tony Award for her role as Sally Brown in the Broadway musical You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. She is also celebrated for originating the role of Glinda in Wicked, which also earned her a Tony Award nomination. In 2010, she appeared as Fran Kubelik in Promises, Promises alongside Sean Hayes.

She won an Emmy Award for her performance as Olive Snook in the television dramedy Pushing Daisies. Chenoweth is also known on TV for playing Annabeth Schott in The West Wing, and most recently as April Rhodes in GLEE, a role for which she was Emmy-nominated in 2010 and 2011. She also had her own TV series, Kristin. Her film credits include Bewitched, The Pink Panther, Running With Scissors, Stranger Than Fiction, Four Christmases, RV and the upcoming films Ed Zwick’s Family Weekend and Outrun.

Produced in Nashville, the country pop album Some Lessons Learned is Chenoweth’s fourth album on Sony. Her debut album Let Yourself Go (2001) centered on show and movie musical classics including the title track, from the 1936 Fred Astaire film Follow the Fleet. It was followed in 2005 by As I Am, an album of Christian music, and in 2008, a holiday album A Lovely Way To Spend Christmas.

RAMMSTEIN, the Berlin-based band known for their incendiary live performances, will bring their brand new live production to North America this spring for 21 dates kicking off April 20th in Ft. Lauderdale. Tickets for the tour, promoted by Live Nation, will go on sale in Denver on Saturday, November 19th and will be available at Ticketmaster.com, and LiveNation.com

Demand for Rammstein's pyrotechnic-laden performances has been so great in Europe, where they regularly play capacity level soccer stadiums, the band spent nearly a full decade without setting foot on North American shores. In December 2010, the sextet returned to North America for two sold out shows including a performance at Madison Square Garden. Rammstein followed with a 9-day trek of major North American cities in spring 2011.

The Los Angeles Times described the live experience as “...epic stagecraft on a Wagnerian scale, several notches up from most arena rock.”

The tour announcement comes on the heels of news of the band's first retrospective release, Made In Germany 1995 - 2011, which will be available in North America (through a distribution deal between Universal Germany and Vagrant Records) on December 13. Rammstein recently released "Mein Land," a new four-track digital single that features two new songs: the title track and "Vergiss uns Nicht" as well as remixes from BossHoss and Mogwai. A video directed by Jonas Akerlund for "Mein Land" is also currently featured Rammstein.com. Rammstein's most recent full-length album, Liebe Ist Für Alle Da, debuted at #13 on the Billboard Top 200 in October 2009.

Rammstein first stormed America in 1998, touring with a set based on their Grammy-nominated breakthrough second release, Sehnsucht, featuring Du hast, the song that brought the world’s attention to the band. During their 1998 Family Values tour, praise was high, as well as indignation: band members were jailed in the US on indecency charges due to the highly provocative live show.

Bon Iver brings us a brilliant new music video for “Towers,” a single off of their Grammy winning album, Bon Iver. Directed by filmmaker Nabil Elderkin, who you’ll recognize as the director for “Holocene,” the video follows one man through a beautiful part of Washington state, home to Indian-preserved land. Elderkin told us, “When Justin sent me a breakdown of what certain parts/lines of the song meant to him I did my best to decode it and curate into something simple, and hopefully the viewer can take from it their own feeling of what the towers represent.” How “simple” could describe such a breathtaking video boggles the mind, but indeed it does. A pure simplicity rings true to the work, with no gimmicks or overt constructionism at play. The video grows organically, breathing additional life into a song that already aurally invokes the senses. Joining the audio now is a stimulating visual experience. Do watch the video.

Bon Iver also announces a new Towers 12-inch, featuring a cover of John Prine’s “Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)” as the b-side. The single is out March 6th and you can pre-order it HERE.

Bassnectar is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton, and it exists as an open-sourced musical project that is as diverse as it is heavy, as raw as it is meticulous, and as fierce as it is imaginary. Spanning the spectrum of sonic style, the music covers every genre imaginable and smashes it all into a synthesis of intense, wobbling bass lines and hypnotic soundscapes.

Whether remixing, collaborating, writing, DJing, performing live or working on constant social networking, Bassnectar’s music is the lure and social impact is the sincere intention. According to Ashton, “We are so blessed, and so deeply fortunate to be alive and awake right now…it’s a basic truth, but it’s very powerful. I think privilege confers responsibility, and Bassnectar is a reflection of that opportunity to give back; the motion of my cells bouncing back at the world.”

Bassnectar’s most recent releases are Cozza Frenzy (2009), Timestretch (2010), Wildstyle (2010), and Divergent Spectrum (2011). Through his self-run Amorphous Music label and studio, he has remixed/collaborated with the likes of Ellie Goulding, Gogol Bordello, KRS-One, Perry Farrell, Fever Ray, Spearhead, STS9, and Buckethead; as well as created various remix projects with producers such as Z-trip, Diplo, BT, ill.Gates, 6Blocc, DJ Vadim, RJD2 and Jantsen.

Along the way, the Bassnectar tour has headlined stops at some of the most noted venues in the country, touring with a wall of sound and light show to match. Multi-platinum rock band Daughtry will debut its new single “Outta My Head” during the March 15 episode of Fox’s American Idol. Legacy Recordings is proud to announce the domestic release of two essential new titles from the seminal metal band Scorpions: Comeblack, a new album of classic rock covers and fresh performances of signature repertoire recorded earlier this year, and Get Your Sting and Blackout - Live in 3D, available on Blu-ray disc, an 11-camera 3-D concert film recorded in Saarbrucken, Germany on April 15, 2011 during Scorpions current farewell tour.

Launched by guitarist Rudolf Schenker in 1965, Scorpions forged metal, rock and pop into a sound that's come to signify an entire genre through hard rock anthems like "Rock You Like A Hurricane" and hits like "Send Me An Angel," "Wind of Change" and "Still Loving You," selling more than 100 million records in the process.

Last year, Scorpions announced that the group's Get Your Sting and Blackout tour, an epic ongoing worldwide rock 'n' roll odyssey in support of 2010's Sting in the Tail, would be the group's last before retirement. The tour is slated to run through 2012 with a string of historic farewell blowouts and festival performances scheduled Europe culminating with shows at the
Wacken Open Air festival (August 4, 2012) and Munich's Olympiahalle (October 13, 2012).

Wanting to create a truly memorable concert film to do justice to power of the live show and the high energy emotional impact of the final tour, Scorpions chronicled the sold-out concert on April 15, 2011 in Saarbrucken, Germany with a state-of-the-art 3D production. Helmed by director Gerd F. Schultze (who's worked on 3D films with Michael Jackson, Bryan Adams, Joe Cocker, Carlos Santana and German superstar Peter Maffay), Get Your Sting and Blackout -Live in 3D puts the viewer into the VIP box at the ultimate Scorpions concert. In addition to 100 minutes of pure Scorpions music, Get Your Sting and Blackout - Live in 3D includes more than half-an-hour of behind-the-scenes bonus material.

"The preview audience was absolutely euphoric and stunned by the intensity and the neverbefore-witnessed power and intimacy in which they were able to experience the Scorpions’ fantastic concert," said Gerd Schultze following a theatrical screening of the film. "The people left the screening with a completely new and never-before-seen concert experience and wanted to watch it all over straight away. Part of the reason is, that we have managed to create an unbelievable 3D depth with a specially developed method, which is very pleasant to watch. Using the new camera technology, we managed to translate 3D in the cut and montage technique in a style that will meet the expectations of a first class product even in ten years time. It makes you feel like you're sitting in the VIP lounge amidst the audience through this 11 camera 3D concert staging and its monstrous 5.1 surround and stereo sound. At the same time, The Scorpions perform their unbelievably powerful and visually unique show with all their hits live in your living room. "Saarbrucken was a very good choice," wrote the band in a press statement, "our fans were simply sensational and gave us the chance to thank them for their many years of support."

At some point during the Get Your Sting and Blackout tour ("We can't remember the day, the month or the hour"), Scorpions, enjoying the success of Sting in the Tail and the emotional rejuvenation of the farewell tour ("Screaming fans everywhere we went!") decided to record one last classic album. "The idea to go back to the studio was born out of pure excitement," said the
band who cut an album mixing covers of rock 'n' roll standards that informed and inspired the Scorpions alongside new productions and performances of the songs in the band's core catalog that have proved the most meaningful to the members.

The result, Comeblack, is, according to the band, "an encore for our die-hard fans, to thank them for all the support for so many years. At the same time, this is a tribute to legendary bands from the sixties, like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, who have inspired us to follow our dreams. We hope you like it as much as we do... Ghostland Observatory’s entire approach to music – sonically, aesthetically, conceptually – is essentially a melding of the two distinctly different personalities of its two members, Thomas Ross Turner and Aaron Behrens. Whereas Turner, the producer/drummer/keyboardist of the duo, finds solace in the minimal, bleak cable-patch squawks of Karlheinz Stockhausen and the analog-disco-thump of Giorgio Moroder, Behrens’ interests lie more along the lines of psychedelia, rock and various country and blues artists. The result is a shimmering, pulsing pop music that is at once kinetically alive with Behrens’ striking vocals and driving guitar work but also anchored firmly by Turner’s percussive beats and Moog-generated melodies and hooks. Common descriptions include “electro-dance rock,” “synth-funk” and “Freddie Mercury-helms-Daft Punk.”

Deciding to produce a style of music that as yet existed only in their collective consciousnesses; Behrens and Turner formed Ghostland Observatory in Austin in 2003 and haven’t looked back since. They now sell out prominent venues across the country, have played at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Coachella and the Austin City Limits music festival, which they headlined, and continue to play at various music festivals and venues around the globe to an ever increasing fan base, thanks to their now-famous live shows.

The duo’s latest release, Codename: Rondo is equal parts psyechedelia, minimal electronic, rock, funk and soul. With Codename: Rondo, Ghostland Observatory has taken a step in a new direction, both creatively and technically, while still maintaining the essential elements of their unmistakable sound: “sweaty, raw-boned, and direct from the future; committed to electronics, stuck on big beats, yet unmistakably powered by rock ‘n’ roll.”

23-year-old Tigran Mimosa thrills audiences with his vibration-laden sonic endeavors and charismatic stage presence. Instrumental electronic rock band STS9 continues to be at the forefront of the electronic music scene. Recently ranked on Pollstar Magazine’s list of top 25 grossing touring acts in early 2012, STS9 has sold an average of over 9,000 tickets per city including stops in Atlanta, Denver, Chicago and the Mayan Riviera in Mexico. Singer, songwriter and guitarist Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco in the mid-1990’s. The Whole Love is the third album by the band’s current lineup, which solidified in 2004 when guitarist Nels Cline and guitarist/keyboardist Patrick Sansone joined Tweedy, founding bassist John Stirratt, drummer Glenn Kotche and keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen. Together, they released Sky Blue Sky in 2007 and the Grammy-nominated Wilco (The Album) in 2009. Wilco has won Grammy Awards for its 2004 release A Ghost is Born in the Best Alternative Album and Best Recording Package categories. Wilcoʼs Jeff Tweedy won a Grammy award as producer for Mavis Staples 2010 album You Are Not Alone.

Wilco has released 10 studio albums to date, including Mermaid Avenue Volumes 1 & 2, which, in collaboration with British folk singer Billy Bragg, set original music to song lyrics by the truest of American icons, songwriter Woody Guthrie.

Wilco’s dBpm Records is a full-service label releasing all future Wilco recordings and more. ANTI-Records provides distribution and additional label services for all dBpm releases. In 2010 Wilco, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art created the Solid Sound Festival, a three-day event of music, art, comedy and culture. There is no harmony like brotherly harmony. Something indelible in the weave of voices and play of sensibilities is stamped into the fraternal DNA and also stems from a lifetime of shared experiences. You can hear it in classic brother acts across the musical spectrum, from the Louvin Brothers to the Everly Brothers and on down the decades through the Wilson brothers (Beach Boys), the Davies brothers (Kinks), the Allman Brothers and even the Brothers Gibb (a.k.a., the Bee Gees). You can clearly hear fraternal magic at work in the songs of Scott and Seth Avett, better known as the Avett Brothers, as well.

That magic is abundantly evident on I and Love and You, the Avett Brothers’ big-label debut. Its 13 songs are delivered in a style that defies pigeonholing but might be described as a rootsy amalgam of folk, country, bluegrass, rock and pop – even a jab of punk-style dynamics here and there. Drawn by the naked honesty of their songs and the rousing intensity of their live shows, legendary producer and talent scout Rick Rubin signed the Avett Brothers – consisting of siblings Scott and Seth, plus bassist Bob Crawford - to his American Recordings label in 2008.

A quarter-century ago, the four original members of Blues Traveler, who had known each other since their early teens—John Popper, Chandler Kinchla, the late Bobby Sheehan and Brendan Hill—gathered in the basement of their drummer’s parents’ Princeton, NJ, home and the seeds were born for a band who have released a total of nine studio albums, four of which have gone gold, three platinum and one six-times platinum. Over the course of their illustrious career, Blues Traveler have sold more than 10 million combined units worldwide, played over 2,000 live shows in front of more than 30 million people, and, in “Run-Around,” had the longest-charting radio single in Billboard history, which earned them a Grammy® for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Their movie credits include Blues Brothers 2000, Kingpin, Wildflowers and others. A television favorite, they have been featured on Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits, VH1’s Behind the Music and they hold the record for the most appearances of any artist on The Late Show with David Letterman.

Their brand-new, two-CD retrospective, 25 (Hip-O Select/UMe), offers an impressive overview of that career, with one disc featuring “greatest hits” like “Run-Around,” “Hook,” “But Anyway” and “Carolina Blues” (representing every one of their nine studio albums) and a brand-new cover of Sublime’s “What I Got,” as well as a second disc which includes b-sides, unreleased demos and rarities— among them a remix of “Run-Around” by acclaimed electronic producers Gunslinger and excerpts from the band’s online concept album, Decision of the Skies: A Traveler Tale of Sun and Storm.

“I’m a firm believer that rock and roll keeps you young,” adds co-founding member Chan Kinchla. “Because I don’t feel any different than I did when we started, even though I’ve got a wife, two kids and all kind of life in between. We still go back to that mentality we had as kids, smoking pot and learning to jam. We had our first epiphanies about music together. This is a real family affair.”

“The way the songs have held up moves me,” admits legendary front man Popper, who has gotten down to a svelte 280 from a high of 436 after a gastric bypass 10 years ago, which he admits saved his life. “We’ve really got nothing but love from our audience. If something has quality, it’s constantly reconsidered through the ages. And that’s what we’re doing this for… posterity. We’ve never been 25 before, so having this kind of retrospective, as songwriters, it’s an opportunity for long forgotten songs get their day in court.”

Currently putting the finishing touches on their tenth studio album—the first to feature outside songwriters in addition to the band members’ contributions—the group is taking the opportunity of their milestone to not just look behind, but ahead.

“We intend to keep going as long as they pay us,” laughs Popper, resplendent in bathrobe, Simpsons pajamas and Samurai sword dangling from a belt loop. “We’re going to be in everybody’s face this year. I feel like I’m in my prime. I was convinced I’d be dead at 37.”

“We’re brothers,” concludes Chan. “We’re not done. We’ve got a few more swings left, some more damage to do. I’m sure we bug the shit out of one another at times, but it’s an honor to play onstage with these guys. They are awesome musicians. You have to keep touch with that. And never forget it.”

Greetings from The String Cheese Incident Headquarters….the management team has been hard at work, racking our brains to try and come up with a couple of new and creative ideas for the Barefoot Boys that will properly capture the feeling of excitement we all get when we look ahead to Summer 2012…..we came up with a massive list of ideas that ranged from shooting Billy out of a cannon to having Kyle brew up a pool full of Summer Ale and inviting all of Boulder over for a swim…..unfortunately many of these ideas proved to either be prohibitively expensive, logistically impossible or just downright dumb…..however, we are pleased to report that we did come up with a couple that we wanted to share with everyone.

First, the most exciting thing we have seen sweep across the cultural landscape in the last couple of months has been the mania induced by New York Knick point guard Jeremy Lin….As Mr. Lin is often referred to by the global media as “the Michael Kang of Basketball” we felt that it was only fair for us to return the favor. Therefore, from this moment forth, the band will now be known as The String Cheese Lincident…. Not only are we thrilled by the obvious media boost this will provide for the band but think of the merch possibilities…..Lincredible!!

The second idea we are going to roll out this summer is one that we have actually been working on for a very long time. Way back in the summer of 2003, the band filed a lawsuit in Federal Court against Ticketmaster. The basic gist of the lawsuit was that the band wanted to maintain the ability to sell a large amount of tickets directly to the fans with the intention of keeping the service charge as reasonable as possible. Some very pointed discussions took place, the issue was resolved and the band continued selling tickets as they had always done. Fast forward to today and pay attention…..this is the exciting part….The String Cheese Incident is proud to announce that we have figured out a way to finally achieve the ultimate goal with this whole ticketing exercise…. The Summer Tour of 2012 will be SERVICE CHARGE FREE. That’s right…..if you order tix thru the band’s website there will be no service charge add-ons aside from shipping(which is out of our hands)….the ticket price that is listed is the price that you will pay. The band is going to cover the credit card fee….the band is going to cover the cost to take the orders and fulfill the tickets…..the cost of a $49.95 ticket to Red Rocks will cost you $49.95……the cost of a $49.95 ticket to the Greek will cost you $49.95…..a $239 ticket to Horning’s will be $49.95…just kidding, it will actually be $239….that’s it….super simple. Beach Boys bring historic 50th anniversary tour to Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The Beach Boys, one of the world’s most legendary and influential bands, have reunited for a global 50th Anniversary Tour. In a career marked by artistic triumphs, this past year for James Taylor has been notable for both creative virtuosity and recognition of exceptional achievement. In March 2011, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama in a ceremony at the White House. The medal is the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence recognizing “outstanding achievements and support of the arts.” Also this spring, Taylor was honored with a Carnegie Hall Perspectives series, which consisted of four concert evenings presented by Carnegie Hall and featuring Taylor and personally selected musical guests. The first of these concerts was a gala benefit celebrating the 120th anniversary of Carnegie Hall. Three months after the National Medal of Arts ceremony, Taylor returned to the White House to perform for President Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel at a state dinner held in the Rose Garden.

James Taylor’s music embodies the art of songwriting in its most personal and universal forms. He is a master at describing specific, even autobiographical situations in a way that resonates with people everywhere. For more than forty years Taylor has been a compass for his fans, articulating moments of pain and joy, and letting his listeners know that they are not alone.

As a recording and touring artist, Taylor has set a precedent to which countless young musicians have aspired. His warm baritone is among the most recognized voices in popular music and his distinctive style of guitar-playing has been enormously influential. He has sold more than 50 million albums throughout his career, beginning in 1968 when he was signed to The Beatles’ Apple Records. In 1971, Taylor was featured on the cover of Time magazine, heralded as the harbinger of the singer-songwriter era.

Forty years later, his voice has been a constant in a changing world for his first generation of fans and their children. His songs have had a profound influence on songwriters and music lovers from all walks of life:

“Your Smiling Face,” “Carolina In My Mind,” “Sweet Baby James,” “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,”

He has earned 40 gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards and five Grammy Awards for a catalog that runs from James Taylor (1968) and Sweet Baby James (1970) to Hourglass (1997) and October Road (2002).

His first Greatest Hits album earned the Recording Industry Association of America’s elite Diamond Award, given for sales in excess of 10 million units in the United States. For his artistic accomplishments, Taylor was honored with the 1998 Century Award, Billboard magazine’s highest accolade, bestowed for distinguished creative achievement.

Taylor released his breakthrough album Sweet Baby James in 1970. It went triple-platinum and spawned his first top 10 hit, the intensely personal “Fire and Rain.” The following year saw the release of another million-seller, Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon, with the No. 1 single “You’ve Got a Friend,” written by his longtime friend Carole King. The recording won a Grammy Award in 1971 for Best Pop Male Vocal. In 1972, Taylor scored another gold album with One Man Dog, followed up in 1973 with Walking Man. The album Gorilla (1975) included two more major chart entries: “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and “Mexico.” Following his final Warner Brothers recording, In the Pocket, Taylor moved on to Columbia Records and released a string of critically praised and commercially successful albums: JT, his 1977 double-platinum Columbia debut; Flag (1979); Dad Loves His Work (1981); That’s Why I’m Here (1985); Never Die Young (1988); New Moon Shine (1991); the double-disc Live album (1993); Hourglass (1998), garnering Taylor his first Grammy Award for Best Pop Album; and October Road (2002)—all certified platinum.

The year 2000 saw Taylor’s induction into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences selected him as its MusiCares Person of the Year in 2006, and his One Man Band (2007) was nominated for an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Special. In 2008, Taylor released Covers and Other Covers that features Taylor's full band and is his own musical interpretation of tunes from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. In May 2010, Taylor released the Live at the Troubadour CD/DVD of his November 2007 live performance with Carole King at the Troubadour nightclub in Los Angeles. Their subsequent Troubadour Reunion tour was one of the most successful concert tours of the decade. Most recently, Morgan Neville’s acclaimed documentary, Troubadours: The Rise of the Singer-Songwriter was nominated for the Jury Prize at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was recently broadcast on PBS as part of its prestigious American Masters series.

James Taylor has received honorary doctorates of music from Williams College and the Berklee School of Music. Raised in North Carolina, he lives in western Massachusetts with his wife Caroline and their sons Henry and Rufus.

On the heels of the November release of the stunning Ceremonials CD, one of 2011's most critically acclaimed albums, Florence + The Machine are heading back to the states for the 2nd leg of their tour it was announced today by her record label Universal Republic. Ticket sales went so quickly for the April/May dates that there was high demand to have them return. The first US date is July 21st at White River Ampitheater in Auburn, WA. With recent appearances on Saturday Night Live, GMA, X-Factor, The View, VH 1 Divas and Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Years Eve, Florence fans will get to enjoy the star in a triumphant return to the live stage. As they approach their twentieth anniversary, CAKE’s adherence to their original guiding principles has only grown stronger. Formed in the early nineties as a somewhat antagonistic answer to grunge, which they saw as just another form of big, dumb American rock, CAKE’s democratic processes, defiant self-reliance, and lucid yet ever-inventive music has made them a nation-state unto themselves, with no obvious peers, belonging to no school.

Now, in addition to writing, arranging, producing, and performing their own music, they have taught themselves to engineer their recording projects in their own recently-constructed solar powered studio, which actually generates more power than is needed to run it, causing the building’s electrical meter to run in reverse. CAKE’s latest album, Showroom of Compassion, released on their own Upbeat Records label, making the album as pure
an extension of the DIY aesthetic as ever attempted by an established act.

“There are quite a few different kinds of talent in this band,” observes founding member John McCrea, “so our process has become even more democratic with this record, with the band playing a much larger role in production decisions.” Echoes bassist Gabriel Nelson, “This album is the most collaborative CAKE album – and the band did nearly all the engineering, which has been a real education in technical stuff.”

Initially, CAKE's small sound was mostly just mistaken for weakness, and their embracing of non-rock sonic elements was mostly mistaken for humor. Luckily, there were a few people who seemed to understand. The San Francisco Bay Guardian pointed out that “CAKE doesn’t ask you to suck its angst,” and The St. Louis Dispatch described CAKE’s music as "An utterly fresh sound, especially given today’s preponderance of overblown ‘alternative’ bands." Somehow a copy of CAKE’s first demo tape even made it all the way to France, where it was completely understood and well received – “The drug dealers do not thank CAKE,” astutely observed French music magazine, Les Inrockuptibles.

By maintaining their ideals while continuing to challenge themselves artistically and professionally, CAKE has managed to not only survive, but to thrive. “We still exist,” explains McCrea, “because we’ve always stayed outside of current trends. We’ve watched them inflate and deflate. We’ve never been invited to the party, so we’ve never had to leave the party whether the police arrived or not. It’s a sad and beautiful world.”

The New York Times recently called Kaskade the “new face of electronic dance music,” his own live show being a jaw-dropping spectacle that finds him performing in front of an 80-foot wide, three-story tall LED screen that blares images synched with the music, while strobe lights scan the crowd. Since their sold out Madison Square show to end off 2011, they've played a triumphant performance at the Independent Spirit Awards in February and shared the stage with Preservation Hall Jazz Band commemorating their 50th Anniversary at Carnegie Hall. Jim James also completed a tour with New Multitudes (Jay Farrer, Will Johnson and Anders Parker) in promotion of their album honoring Woody Guthrie. Additionally, the band has been busy curating the Forecastle Festival for the festival's 10th Anniversary, where they will conjointly be headlining the event along with Wilco and Bassnectar.

The band are showing no signs of slowing down in the months surrounding their tour. My Morning Jacket will be contributing to John Fogerty's new album, Wrote a Song for Everyone, which will be released this fall. In the month of June, they will complete a European tour making stops in Spain, The Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Belgium and the United Kingdom. The band will also be headlining this year's Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, Tennessee and Newport, Rhode Island's Newport Folk Festival, as well as performing at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival next month.

Born the youngest of ten children, raised in Southwest Detroit and a resident of Nashville since 2005, Jack White is one of the most prolific and renowned artists of the past fifteen years.

When the White Stripes started in 1997 no one, least of all Jack, ever expected that a red-and-white two-piece band would take hold in the mainstream world. With the release of 2001’s White Blood Cells the band was thrust on magazine covers and captivating audiences through worldwide touring. “Fell in Love With a Girl” served as the band’s breakthrough hit and its accompanying Michel Gondry Lego clip was chosen by Pitchfork Media as the #1 music video of the 2000’s.

The release of Elephant in 2003 not only cemented the band’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with, but it also offered the hit “Seven Nation Army” which has since become appropriated as a de facto stadium chant for many sports teams the world over.

In 2004 White teamed up with Loretta Lynn to produce and perform on her Van Lear Rose album, an effort that won Grammy’s for Best Country Album and Best Country collaboration with vocals for the single “Portland, Oregon.” To date White has won nine Grammys in seven different categories.

White formed a “new band of old friends” the Raconteurs in 2006 and their debut album Broken Boy Soldiers showed a markedly different side, most notably one where songwriting, vocal and guitar duties were shared. The success of their debut-single “Steady, As She Goes” proved that White’s previous accomplishments were no fluke.

To take it even further, in 2009 White took to his original instrument, the drums, and started the Dead Weather with members of the Kills, Queens of the Stone Age and the Greenhornes. Releasing two albums in two years and unleashing a dark, captivating live show upon curious audiences, the Dead Weather further-cemented Jack White’s musical versatility and range.

Also in 2009, White opened the doors to his very own record label, Third Man Records, where he has produced over 120 records in less than three years. Spanning artists as varied as Jerry Lee Lewis, the Smoke Fairies, Wanda Jackson, Black Milk and Stephen Colbert, the label has quickly developed a reputation as a leader in the vinyl record industry.

In January 2012 White announced the upcoming release of his debut album Blunderbuss, available April 24th, which will be accompanied by extensive touring across the world.

Spend a day with Thievery Corporation’s Eric Hilton and Rob Garza and you will see that their thoughtful curiosity about the world finds its way into their sophisticated, impeccably crafted musical soundscapes that reflect not only their broad appreciation for diverse styles of music (everything from Brazilian bossa nova and Jamaican dub reggae to vintage film soundtracks and psychedelic space rock), but also their take on the complicated times in which we live.

Since banding together 16 years ago, these two independent thinkers have taken a DIY approach to their musical and cultural interests, which has led to the formation of their own record label, ESL Music, through which Thievery Corporation release recordings by a slew of international artists, such as Federico Aubele, Ursula 1000, and Thunderball, as well as their own recordings. The label is run out of the basement of a Gothic-style three-level townhouse in Washington, D.C., that is also home to Thievery Corporation’s recording studio, which is filled with the latest high-tech gear as well as vintage guitars and Moog keyboards. The studio is where the two songwriters and producers have crafted their own output: six studio albums, three compilations, and numerous EP’s and singles — an impressive body of diverse work that has made Thievery Corporation one of the most influential and respected names on the electronic/dance music scene.

In June of 2011, the duo released its sixth studio album, Culture of Fear — a cinematic-sounding inquiry into space rock that straddles the sweet spot between funk and soul, with a bit of dub and reggae thrown in for good measure. Culture of Fear continues to address the socially conscious themes that Thievery Corporation have explored since 2002 when they released their third studio album, The Richest Man in Babylon, which incorporated protest music into their sound.

They followed Babylon with 2005’s The Cosmic Game, which featured politically minded collaborations with Perry Farrell, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, and David Byrne. In 2008, the duo paid homage to people’s resistance movements around the world with Radio Retaliation — setting a think-for-yourself agenda to eclectic sounds from Jamaica, Latin America, Asia, and The Middle East. The album, which questioned the profit-driven mentality of corporate media, earned Thievery Corporation a Grammy Award nomination for Best Recording Packaging. (An image of Mexican revolutionary Subcomandante Marcos appears on its printed cardboard sleeve cover.)

“We’re probably more radical in our political beliefs than most of the hardcore punk bands,” Hilton says, “but at the same time, we’re realistic about what we can actually do. We feel like our role is to be commentators.” Adds Garza: “The best thing we can do is try to open people’s minds.” For both Hilton and Garza, the seeds for their shared philosophy were sown while growing up near the nation’s capital, which has spawned an abundance of progressive punk bands over the years, such as Bad Brains, Minor Threat, and Fugazi. “We’re influenced by that mentality, but the music doesn’t need to be about super aggressive guitars or hard-charging beats to convey that feeling,” Hilton says. “Sometimes you can just break things down and be more subtle.” Instead, the duo reveal their globally aware mindset by setting their lyrical diatribes to a lush mélange of international grooves, inviting vocalists and musicians from around the world, including Nigerian Afrobeat heir Femi Kuti, Persian singer Lou Lou, and Jamaican reggae toaster Sleepy Wonder, to appear on their recordings. As the L.A. Weekly put it: “Thievery Corporation’s dance hall is a delectably subversive refuge for dissent, a multilingual broadside against complacency and the powers that be.”

Over the years, Thievery Corporation has also become known for the carnival-esque atmosphere of their live shows, during which they bring out a 15-member live band of musicians and vocalists. The group has sold out shows at such famed venues as Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the Hollywood Bowl, London’s 02 Shepherds Bush Empire, and the Theatro Vrahon Melina Merkouri in Athens, Greece, among many others. “To see Lou Lou, a Persian singer singing in Farsi, as America debates on a war with Iran, on stage with band members from all corners of the earth singing in Spanish, Portuguese, French, and so on, it makes people wonder,” Garza says. “And if you can get people to question the things around them, even just a little bit, that’s not such a bad thing.”

Over twenty years after forming legendary ska-punk band Sublime, band co-founder/bass player Eric Wilson met another singer/guitarist that would deeply affect his life. That musician – his junior by nearly two decades - was 20-year-old Rome Ramirez. In Wilson’s own words, “this kid could play guitar like a mofo and he’s got a platinum voice.” Incidentally, Wilson had previously reserved that same description for his former Sublime bandmate, the late Bradley Nowell.

Formed in Long Beach, CA, in 1988, Sublime delivered an irresistible blend of ska, reggae, punk, surf rock, and hip-hop that captured the imagination of fans around the world. Over the course of its three albums — 1992’s double-platinum 40oz. to Freedom, 1994’s gold Robbin’ the Hood, and 1996’s 6x-platinum self-titled major-label debut — the band has now sold more than 17 million albums worldwide. Nowell died of a heroin overdose two months prior to the release of Sublime, which reached No. 13 on the Billboard Top 200, sold six million copies, and spawned such hits as “What I Got,” “Santeria,” and “Wrong Way,” which remain radio staples across with country. (“Date Rape,” from 40oz. to Freedom, is the all-time most requested song on influential Los Angeles rock radio station KROQ, which has listed Sublime as its No. 3 act in its annual “Biggest Bands” list for the last six years.) Profoundly affected by Nowell’s death, Wilson never considered performing the group’s music live without their frontman.

It took the talent and enthusiasm of Rome Ramirez — a genial, now 23-year-old newcomer and gifted songwriter and musician — to change that. Growing up in the Bay Area, Rome was introduced to Sublime’s music by his uncle, and credits the band with inspiring him to first pick up a guitar and learn to play at age 11. “It was the first time I ever really wanted to make music as opposed to just listen to it,” he says. Rome began singing and writing songs as a teenager and was playing solo gigs around the Bay Area when he met Wilson (the two were recording at the same studio).

An instant friendship and musical bond was formed. The first big show as Sublime With Rome came in October 2009 at Cypress Hill’s annual Smokeout Festival, performing in front of 20,000 people. A sold-out tour in March 2010 followed with spontaneous sing-alongs and writhing mosh-pits at every stop. That fall, Sublime With Rome entered the studio with to begin recording their debut album.

The result was Yours Truly, released in the Summer of 2011. The album, produced by Paul Leary, both picks up where Sublime left off and builds on what they’ve accomplished, thanks to the fresh infusion of energy from Rome, who brought in lyrics, melodies, and chords he’d written over the past few years. Songs like first single “Panic” (a Top 5 Modern Rock hit), “Take It Or Leave,” and “You Better Listen” are reminiscent of vintage Sublime, while songs like “Lover’s Rock” and “Murdera” pick up on the reggae dancehall style the band had begun exploring in 1996. “Paper Cuts” has a distinct punk flavor, while “PCH” and “Spun” have more of a rock-pop feel.

With the release of Yours Truly, Sublime with Rome spent the rest of the year touring the world and treating fans to both new songs as well as Sublime favorites that many never had a chance to hear live. Bringing things full circle, the band’s first performance of 2012 was at this year’s Smokeout Festival, joined by celebrated drummer and longtime friend Josh Freese. And to make up for lost time, the trio plans to stay out on the road as long as they can.

Chicago-based film score composer, multi-instrumentalist and lyricist Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. As a teen Bird became interested in a variety of styles including early jazz, country blues and gypsy music, synthesizing them into his unique brand of pop. Since beginning his recording career in 1997 he has released 11 albums, his first solo record Weather Systems coming in 2003. Bird has gone on to record with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall. Most recently Bird composed his first ever film score for the movie Norman (hailed as “a probing, thoughtful score” by The New York Times; available now on Mom + Pop), contributed to the soundtrack of The Muppets and collaborated with inventor Ian Schneller on Sonic Arboretum, an installation at New York’s Guggenheim Museum and Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art.

Out April 10, 2012, 'Slipstream' marks her first new album in seven years, and the debut for her newly-minted label, Redwing Records. While most of 'Slipstream' is self-produced and features Raitt's longtime touring band, four of the album's songs were helmed by celebrated producer Joe Henry (Allen Toussaint, Solomon Burke) and showcase his usual crew of extraordinary musicians. Additional guests include Bill Frisell, Al Anderson (formerly of NRBQ), Ireland's Paul Brady, and Maia Sharp. Prog Rock? Prog Rock? In 2012? Are you serious? Well, yes actually – although let’s use the original term ‘progressive rock’. Cast aside all prejudices as Jethro Tull’s singer / flautist / composer Ian Anderson explains what led him to revisit the genre some 40 years after the ground-breaking Tull album Thick As A Brick.

In the early 1970s bands like Yes, Genesis, ELP and King Crimson were pushing musical boundaries. The arrival of punk cast a shadow over a style of music that admittedly was becoming self-indulgent and pretentious, and the term Prog Rock became somewhat derogatory. But, Ian explains, “To me, anything is progressive if you are trying to take things on into a slightly new dimension, and draw upon different influences and push them into something that fits your own sense of inventiveness and your own career progression. So ‘progressive rock’ is a fine title.”

Jethro Tull’s short ‘prog rock’ era peaked with 1972’s Thick As A Brick, a 45-minute continuous piece of music charting the difficulties of a child growing up and confronting a frightening and unfair world. The album was encased in a spoof local newspaper The St Cleve Chronicle, with a headline story that a precocious schoolboy called Gerald Bostock had been disqualified from a poetry competition because of the inappropriate nature of his epic poem, which Tull then allegedly used as the album’s lyrics. Ian explains that the idea stemmed from the critics’ descriptions of 1971’s Aqualung as a ‘concept album’, even though it was just a bunch of songs a few of which had common themes. “In the light of the Aqualung reviews I deliberately set out to do a concept album that would in essence be a bit of a parody of other people’s concept albums and grandiose progressive rock adventures. I thought let’s take this slightly arrogant and pompous way of writing and presenting music to an extreme, with the fiction of a then 10-year old boy having written the lyrics. Of course it’s preposterous and really quite silly, but it was the era of Monty Python, when that sort of surreal British humour was quite well embedded in the British psyche.”

The album was a world-wide success, including a No 1 spot on the American Billboard chart, and excerpts from the piece have regularly featured in Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson live shows. But Ian had steadily resisted record company suggestions that he write a follow-up. It was not until a chance encounter in 2010 with old pal Derek Shulman of Gentle Giant, who nagged him to consider a 40th anniversary sequel, that Ian gave it some serious thought – and surprised himself by not dismissing it out of hand this time. He had noticed that in recent years his audiences had been changing. “It wasn’t just old codgers, it was kind of a mix between old codgers and young codgers. It really struck me that there was this new wave of interest from youngsters who want something that is an alternative and antidote to the X-Factor and the very repetitive rock music that does tend to be the stuff of today. So I began to feel that it was not quite as undignified as I had earlier supposed to be doing something that was more in that kind of progressive vein.”

In February 2011 Ian spent a couple of days sketching out some ideas. “It was predicated on the idea of what might have befallen Gerald Bostock, this precocious child, where would he have headed in life? And the more I started thinking about that the more I thought that there were so many pivotal moments in my own childhood where, often quite by chance, I might have gone in one direction or in some completely opposite direction. I could have been anything from a soldier or a sailor or an astronaut to a thespian or a silviculturist - although when I left school I actually tried first to join the police force and then to be a journalist on the local newspaper, before music took over while I was at art college.

“So I imagined Gerald Bostock as this 10-year old kid entering into puberty who, by the look of the young male model who was photographed in 1972 as the notional Gerald Bostock, was obviously a rather swottish schoolboy who probably wasn’t very popular at school and probably wasn’t very good at sports. What sort of opportunities would he have had, who would he have been, what would he have been led towards? I started to write a number of scenarios, including a piece looking at his possible early life immediately post-puberty, and then another piece later on for each of these characters that Gerald might have become, leading through to adulthood. Then in the latter part of the album I drew all these things back into a common kismet-karma kind of future where, in spite of all these chance interventions, there is maybe some element of fate and we all end up where we were going to end up anyway, in spite of the fact that we may have taken some radically different roads along the way.”

From that loose concept emerged TAAB 2. Recorded in November 2011 with Florian Opahle (guitar), John O’Hara (keyboards), David Goodier (bass) and Scott Hammond (drums), musically Ian has very deliberately echoed the feel of the 1972 album by using many of the same instruments, including a lot of acoustic guitar and lashings of Hammond organ, and to a large extent recording it with the band all playing live together, with the minimum of overdubs and no use of limiters and noise gates and other tricks of the trade, leaving engineer Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree) to tweak things himself. And, whilst there are ID points to allow separate tracks to be downloaded from iTunes, it is a continuous 53-minute piece of music with recurring musical themes.

Also echoing the 1972 album, and the St Cleve Chronicle newspaper sleeve, the 2012 album is housed in a mock-up of a local news website www.StCleve.com, which Ian designed himself in a deliberately not-too-professional pastiche of community websites (and which will be accessible online, with an area where fans can add their own spoof local news stories). ”It’s light-hearted most of the way through StCleve.com, with lots of fairly vulgar schoolboy smutty stuff, but there are also some serious bits and things that are quite observational of the parochial home counties way of life. There will be some familiar characters like Max Quad, and Angela de Groot who runs a fitness centre now. And there will also be various people known to me and known to the world, although their names are slightly twisted around. But you’ll know who they are….” And the 18-month world tour, starting in the UK on April 14th, will also nod to 40 years ago and what Ian describes as the “amateur dramatics village hall” 1972 stage show with a new theatrical presentation involving videos and character actors.

What is Ian’s view of the finished project? “Unlike the original 1972 Thick As A Brick, the mood of the album is not really a spoof. It’s not a funny thing; some of it is quite heart-aching and serious, and sometimes a bit intellectual, and sometimes a bit upbeat and amusing, but not in a spoof-fun way. It’s an altogether rather more serious work, and even when you think it’s being light-hearted and funny there’s a seriousness behind it.

“It’s observational about stereotype characters. And one of the stereotypes I chose not to make Gerald, at least on the album, was a politician, as it seemed too obvious – although he does appear on the album sleeve as a recently unseated Labour MP who’s come to live in the St Cleve vicinity. He does however appear in other guises like a corrupt Christian evangelist, as an overpaid investment banker with huge bonuses and the kind of person we love to hate these days, and as a casualty of war as a repatriated serviceman helping those less fortunate than himself to acclimatise back into the real world with obviously a very bitter sense of the futility of war. Those are down moments and scary moments. But you need to take people through it. So you sometimes do it in a light-hearted way.

“Somebody may draw the parallel with Quadrophenia, but that’s completely wrong. This is not split personality, this is about totally different characters that we all might have become in our lives. If we’d walked on the other side of the road, or picked up the ‘phone, or read that article in the newspaper, things like that could have changed our lives. And that unmistakably is what happens to people in their lives, the friends they make, the relationships they enter into, perhaps in marriage or whatever else. This is all about – as it says in a couple of places – the what ifs, the maybes and might have beens moments in life.

“One of the pivotal moments on this album is the piece A Change Of Horses, which fans will recognise from our stage shows over the last year or so. It’s about that point in your life where you say, if there’s ever going to be a change it’s got to be now. That happens to a lot of people perhaps in the forties or fifties, and I rather like the idea of this re-gearing, this re-evaluation, and there being a second part in your life where fate draws you to some conclusion. But it’s not just looking back, it’s also about looking forward. The what ifs and maybes were rich and exciting moments in my teenage years, filled with a mixture of promise and sheer terror, because it’s a scary world out there. So that’s what I’m exploring, and I think it works for people at both ends of the age spectrum, for the middle-aged Waitrose trolley-pushing shopper and the pubescent youngster who’s facing some decision-making.”

So just to confirm, from a 2012 perspective, is TAAB 2 a concept album? Ian is emphatic in his response. “Yes, it is very much a concept album! It is a concept album that I think is fairly grown-up and mature, but I think it should ring bells for people of all ages. It’s an intellectual proposition. I’m not sure how many people are going to be ready for that kind of a thing, but I think there will be enough people for it to be a worthwhile record to make. But it’s unashamed in its asking you to think about it and listen to it. Some of the music is pretty straight-ahead which you can just kind of groove to, and some things work without your being too cerebral about it. But the overall concept and indeed lots of the lyrics and parts of the music you are going to have to make a bit of an effort with. I think that some of us like to do that. Combine that with all the detail that’s gone into the peripheral aspect of presenting the album with the artwork, the stcleve.com website and so on, it all wraps up into a big package that I think will give people a lot of fun.”
